Global Paint Industry's Major M&A Event
On October 5th, a significant merger and acquisition event shook the global paint industry. The Dutch paint giant AkzoNobel officially announced that it has reached a binding acquisition agreement with Nippon Paint (a subsidiary of Nippon Paint Holdings), with Nippon Paint acquiring AkzoNobel's decorative paint business in seven countries across Southeast Asia and Oceania for a company value of $1.35 billion (approximately 9.05 billion RMB).

According to the official information disclosed by both parties, the scope of this acquisition is precisely focused on the civil decorative paint sector, covering all decorative paint assets, operational businesses, and local market channels of AkzoNobel in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, and Australia.
This transaction is a targeted asset divestment, not a sale of the entire business. AkzoNobel explicitly stated that it will retain all ownership of its core performance coatings business and the entire ownership of its global business service organization, only divesting the regional decorative paint business with lower profitability and strategic fit. At the same time, the company is expected to obtain about $1 billion in net cash proceeds after deducting taxes and related expenses for minority shareholders, further optimizing its overall cash flow.
This transaction is the result of long-term strategic competition and business restructuring between the two parties. As early as July 2026, AkzoNobel had publicly confirmed receiving multiple non-binding acquisition proposals from Nippon Paint for its Asian-Pacific decorative paint business. At that time, both parties had already initiated preliminary talks and asset valuation due diligence, laying the foundation for the formal signing of this agreement.
For AkzoNobel, this sale is a key step in its global business simplification strategy. In recent years, this international paint giant has been focusing on high-value-added industrial coatings and special performance coatings core tracks, gradually divesting the regional civil decorative paint business with scattered, competitive, and limited profit space. By contracting non-core assets and recycling cash flow, it concentrates resources on deepening its strengths in high-end industrial coatings, functional coatings, and other advantageous fields, enhancing its global core business competitiveness.
For Nippon Paint, this acquisition is an important layout for deepening its presence in the Asian-Pacific market and consolidating its regional leading position. Prior to this, Nippon Paint had already possessed a mature brand, channel, and supply chain system in the Asian-Pacific region. After acquiring AkzoNobel's decorative paint business in the seven countries, it can quickly integrate high-quality local market resources, fill the gap in regional layout, and significantly increase its market share and voice in the civil paint market in Southeast Asia and Oceania.
