From March 16 to 22, 2026, the French luxury home brand Roche Bobois will be hosting a cross-over feast of art and life at its flagship store on Huaihai West Road in Shanghai. This event not only commemorates the 55th anniversary of the brand's timeless classic, the Mah Jong "Mahjong" sofa, but also marks the first-time introduction of the brand's exclusive new collection in collaboration with the renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar.
The Mah Jong "Mahjong" sofa, one of the brand's most iconic designs, has always symbolized the spirit of freedom and the French art of living. Designed by the German design master Hans Hopfer for Roche Bobois in 1971, this modular sofa challenged the traditional logic of the living room space with its fully dismantlable, combinable, and stackable design language.
For 55 years, the Mah Jong has not only become a totemic presence of the brand but also been reborn through collaborations with numerous fashion design masters and brands, such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Kenzo Takada, and Missoni, among others, in different cultural contexts.
On the occasion of its 55th anniversary, Roche Bobois showcases the evolution of this legendary design with new fabrics, colors, and scenes at its flagship store. Mah Jong is not only a milestone in the history of design but also a contemporary declaration that is constantly being written.
Another highlight of the event is the exclusive new collection created by Roche Bobois in collaboration with the famous Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, which is making its Chinese debut at the event. The special reissue of the Lounge sofa, the precursor to Mah Jong, serves as the prototype for the design. The Lounge sofa not only carries the deep historical heritage of the brand but also provides the perfect canvas for Almodóvar's imaginative colors and patterns. This is both a tribute to the classic and a symbol of the perfect blend of history and avant-garde in Roche Bobois' design philosophy.
Almodóvar is known for his intense, luxurious, and dynamic cinematic aesthetics, where color is an indispensable narrative protagonist. This new series continues his signature color palette and artistic collage language, transforming the visual symbols of his films into fabric patterns and spatial textures, presenting scenes of life with full dramatic tension in the details of the sofa, cushions, and accessories. In March 2026, Roche Bobois' Shanghai flagship store on Huaihai West Road will open a new chapter between the classic and the avant-garde.
