Transforming Life with Nanotechnology: Panasonic's Nanoe™ Technology
Transforming life with complex technology, the nanoscale charged water particles are quietly changing the way Chinese people breathe, beautify their skin, and approach aging.
In the laboratory of Panasonic's Akagi Factory in Japan, a technician demonstrated a simple experiment for visiting media: placing a cloth with a strong curry smell in a regular box and a box equipped with the Nanoe™ generator. After just a few seconds, the cloth in the box with the Nanoe™ generator completely disappeared the curry smell, while the cloth in the other box still had a distinct curry odor.
Behind this simple demonstration is Panasonic's 20-plus-year patented technology - Nanoe™.
On September 17, 2025, media partners and designers from all over the country gathered at Panasonic's Akagi Factory in Japan to witness Panasonic's latest research and development in the field of air. This factory is the only production line for the fourth-generation Nanoe™ generator, and the event presented a comprehensive view of Panasonic's development from technology research to innovation breakthrough, vividly expressing the evolution of water ions over the past 20 years.

The story dates back to 1997.
At that time, the engineer of Panasonic Electric, Takaharu Yamanaka, was interested in the topic of "the attachment and removal of smoke smell on curtains." In 2001, he collaborated with Professor Kijiro Oshima of Hiroshima University, who was studying "the technology of generating charged micro-particle water," to develop a charged micro-particle water generator.
After a series of hypotheses and validations, in 2003, the team launched the world's first air purifier equipped with nanoe™ technology; ultimately, nanoe™ nanometer water ion technology became a new technology to improve air quality, and in March 2020, it was officially named "Nanoe™" in Chinese.
The generation principle of Nanoe™ is to collect moisture from the air, produce nanometer-sized charged water particles through high-voltage electrolysis. These particles are extremely small, only one thousandth the size of ordinary negative ions, and can penetrate to the depths of fibers to exert their effects.
Compared to traditional ion technology, Nanoe™ has unique attributes of safety and long-lasting effectiveness. Takaharu Yamanaka, Deputy Director of the Marketing Department of Panasonic Electric Equipment (China) Co., Ltd., explained: "Because it originates from the moisture in the air and ultimately returns to water, it is a unique, harmless to humans, and clean ion technology."

This ion has a long lifespan, can exist in the air for a long time, spread to every corner, and achieve comprehensive space purification.
The story can also start from 2025.
Nanoe™ technology has gone through more than 20 years of development. From the research and development in 2001 to the present, this technology has completed three major upgrades.
The first generation of Nanoe™ generates 48 billion OH free radicals per second, while the latest upgraded high-concentration Nanoe™X technology has achieved the generation of 960 billion OH free radicals per second. Compared to the initial technology, the purification efficiency has increased nearly 20 times.
"Currently, the generation of hydroxyl OH free radicals has increased from 48 billion per second to 4.8 trillion per second, achieving a 100-fold leap in purification efficiency," added Ryuuma Komori, Director of Business Planning of Panasonic Electric Equipment (China) Co., Ltd. This geometric growth has greatly increased the purification speed of Nanoe™, making its deodorization and sterilization capabilities more rapid and efficient.

Regarding the views of outsiders that Panasonic's technology innovation is not active enough, Takaharu Yamanaka responded: "What everyone sees may not have changed, and one reason may be that we have always used the name Nanoe™, which is equivalent to a technical brand name." In fact, the technology has been iterating and upgrading internally.
The application scenarios of Nanoe™ technology have expanded from the initial home appliance field to multiple fields such as construction, automotive, and medical care.
In the home appliance field, Nanoe™ has become the core element of product differentiation for Panasonic. In 2016, Panasonic instructed that Nanoe™ be equipped with all series of air conditioners. Now, from air purifiers to air conditioners, from hair dryers to refrigerators, Nanoe™ technology has covered all of Panasonic's home appliance product lines.
In the construction field, Panasonic has integrated Nanoe™ into the "Air管家" 6恒气候站, creating a "constant temperature, humidity, oxygen, cleanliness, quietness, and wind" healthy living environment through precise temperature and humidity control and air purification.
In the automotive and transportation field, Nanoe™ technology has been applied to Japanese models such as Toyota and Lexus, as well as the electric train system in Japan.
In the aging field, Nanoe™ technology is playing a unique value. Ryuuma Komori pointed out: "Under the silver economy in China, the health needs of the elderly are not only to treat diseases but also to prevent and be comfortable. The antibacterial and antiviral function of Nanoe™ can reduce the risk of disease infection in the elderly; its deodorization characteristic can eliminate the pet smell and care smell in nursing homes or homes. By eliminating odors, Nanoe™ can reduce the stress of both the elderly and caregivers." The Yada-Panasonic community in Yixing, Jiangsu Province has 794 households equipped with the 6恒气候 station with Nanoe™.
For the future, Nanoe™ technology has a clear plan. Takaharu Yamanaka said: "The ultimate goal of the technology is to make people feel comfortable and secure. Panasonic's Housing Space Division will also focus on the theme of 'health' that everyone is currently concerned about, continuously develop new technologies and new products, and then deepen the value of products to better serve customers."
In the Chinese aging market, Nanoe™ is opening up the market with precise demand matching. Ryuuma Komori pointed out that under the silver economy in China, the health needs of the elderly are not only to treat diseases but also to prevent and be comfortable.
