Design Crisis: The Lack of Aesthetic Value and Life Philosophy in Modern Times
In this era of material abundance, our residential decoration and design tend to be more superficial and homogenous. This is due to the advancement of design software and the abundance of reference materials available. However, designs with real aesthetic value and life wisdom are becoming increasingly scarce. The contemporary design field is facing a profound crisis—not a technological one, but a crisis of aesthetics and life philosophy. Spaces filled with expensive materials but devoid of soul, and design schemes copied from online image libraries with no connection to the residents' lives, all indicate a harsh reality: We are living in an era of design prosperity but a lack of aesthetic value.
The first sign of the困境 in contemporary design is the confusion between the concepts of "decoration" and "design." Many so-called designers simplify design to a superficial beautification project, indulging in the所谓的 symbols of style and form. Ming Dynasty writer Wen Zhenheng once said in his book "Changwu Zhi": "Living among mountains and rivers is the best, followed by living in villages, and then in the suburbs." This reflection on the essence of living is exactly what is most lacking in the contemporary design field. Design should not be an exhibition of the designer's creativity, but a container for life; it should not pursue visual stimulation, but the comfort of the body and mind.
A deeper problem lies in the fact that contemporary design education overemphasizes technical operation while neglecting the humanistic nurturing. How can someone who only knows how to operate 3D modeling software but lacks an understanding of life aesthetics create a space with warmth? Song Dynasty painter Guo Xi proposed the observation method of "Looking far to grasp the trend, looking close to grasp the essence" in his book "Lin Quan Gao Zhi." This delicate perception of nature and life is the foundation for cultivating aesthetic ability. When designers themselves lack a love for life, sensitivity to the change of seasons, and a sense of the morning and evening light and shadow, how can their works evoke others' aesthetic resonance?
The essence of design is the shaping of a lifestyle. Northern European design emphasizes functionality and simplicity, while Chinese design advocates nature and blank space. The philosophy behind these design philosophies is a profound understanding of the essence of life. To break through the current design困境, it is necessary to rebuild the organic connection between design and life. Designers should step out of the computer screen, experience the hustle and bustle of urban life, and feel the rhythm of all things in nature; homeowners also need to free themselves from the illusion of炫耀性 consumption and rethink what constitutes a quality life. Only when design returns to its original purpose of serving life and nurturing the soul can we say goodbye to those superficial design forgeries and welcome truly vital creations.
In an era of excessive materialism, good design is like a refreshing stream, not showy yet memorable, not dazzling yet full of wisdom. When we learn to appreciate the charm of emptiness and the nobility of simplicity, design can break free from superficial decoration and become a beacon illuminating the beauty of life.
