19th Venice Architecture Biennale: A Paper Umbrella by MAD Architects 19th Venice Architecture Biennale: A Paper Umbrella by MAD Architects
At the 19th Venice International Architecture Biennale, themed "Intelligence: Nature, Artifice, Collectivity," MAD Architects presented their installation piece titled A Paper Umbrella at the outdoor lawn of the Chinese Pavilion.
The work draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese paper umbrella. The installation primarily uses Xuan paper as the main material, coated repeatedly with tung oil to achieve a translucent and waterproof effect. It reinterprets the scale and form with the beauty of modern structure, transforming traditional intangible cultural heritage material craftsmanship into an outdoor space installation that provides shade and shelter.
The Venice Pavilion is located at the end of the Arsenal, offering a serene garden space for visitors to rest, contemplate, or unwind during their walk through the exhibition.
As visitors step under the 'umbrella,' they are transported to a micro-natural theater, where they can experience changing light and subtle indoor-outdoor temperature differences.
"A Paper Umbrella" not only provides a shelter from the rain but also allows visitors to feel the external environment through the breathable gaps and semi-transparent paper. When the sun is scorching and the air is dry, the umbrella's high-level atomizing spray head activates a cooling program. The traditional tung oil material is linked with the modern environmental sensing system, creating a triple-adaptive "ecological field" of temperature, humidity, and light in the open-air area.
The interior of the umbrella combines Oplight SDL smart spectrum lighting technology, which changes with the external weather and light conditions. The light flows across the semi-transparent paper, becoming a pavilion of light and shadow that coexists through the day and night.
The paper skin of the umbrella will yellow, wear, and even fade and degrade with the changes in weather and the passage of time, echoing the non-permanent nature of the outdoor installation. This approach aims to explore a new romantic solution in the context of solving the climate crisis and the coexistence of architecture and the environment.
The installation piece A Paper Umbrella is currently on display at the Chinese Pavilion of the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale, running until November 23, 2025.
